Next Step - 10/24/07

It is amazing to me how often Christ dealt with the subject of respect while He walked on Earth. From woman, to Gentiles, to sinners, to little children; seems that everyone is wanting to dis the other person so they can get ahead. I know it is easy for us to look at them and shake our heads yet I believe we are even worse today. In our society of performance based value system we are all struggling to be better than our neighbors and many of us will go to great lengths to push everyone else down. And still above that we struggle with respecting ourselves and the people that God has made. We think there is something wrong with us, or we are weird because we look different and so we painfully hide within ourselves.
The great news is we can break free from this bondage! God has given us a way out. If we first gain a right respect for God, followed by a respect for how God has created you (stop comparing and looking for significance through the world) and then lastly freedom to respect others around you.

The next step(s):
- When you get irritated with someone, focus on a positive aspect of that person
- humble yourself (Jesus/Others/then You)
- Encourage others by specifically telling them something you respect about them

Let me know what you think, share a comment.

Hey PD/PJ. =]

I liked this lesson. Like Dave said, it hit home. I used to have a hard time with following my parents rules, until I realized that they really do deserve my respect because they do so much for me when I don't deserve it.

But this lesson also helped me to realize that we should respect everyone simply because every person is a creation of God. If we disrespect the creation, we're definitely disrespecting the Creator.

This blog was a sweet idea, I'll definitely be frequenting it. =]

I like the idea of a blog!

Recently with getting a new foster baby, its easy to see my daily lack of respect for my mom. So I've been working to tell her I appreciate her and do the things she asks me to do.

I think that of all the people to respect it can sometimes be the hardest to respect yourself. But when you think of disrespecting yourself as disrespecting God, its kinda different.

I can't wait to see more. This might help some of us keep our focus.
